Homer’s tomb is located in the north of the island of Ios, on the hill of Psathopirgo, above the bay of Plakoto, about 13 km from Chora, the capital of the island and is one of the most important historical-cultural tourist destinations of Ios.
On the hill where this characteristic tomb is located you can also admire a beautiful panoramic view of the northern coast of the island.
The origin of the tomb of Homer
There are many versions of the death of the most important poet in Greece, including the possibility of a fall while the singer visited the island, but without doubt the most accredited one supports the return of Homer to his native land, where he died between 1100 and 900 B.C.
Although there are still many skeptics, the inhabitants of the island are certain that it is the real tomb of the poet, in fact there are testimonies and references of ancient historians and travelers, which confirm its veracity.
Others believe that the singer had decided to be buried in his mother’s native island, Climene. To confirm the thesis that Homer’s mother was born on the island of Ios, an ancient coin with the face of Homer and an ancient writing that shows a calendar of the island of Ios with a month where the name of the poet is indicated.
The legend of Homer’s tomb
According to one of the legends related to the burial of Homer, the famous singer stopped in Ios for a stop, during a trip from Samos to Athens. The inhabitants of the island would ask him a question to which he could not answer, and for this reason he was killed.
Whatever the truth behind the death of Homer, what matters is the charm that releases this mysterious and unmissable place.
From the port of Ios you will depart with a private rib to discover this amazing and wild island, land of nature and ancestral traditions
The Island
Sikinos in Greece is a secluded island of the Cyclades, situated between Folegandros and Ios. Tourism has yet to gasp itself upon this island, thus it remains unspoiled and suitable for relaxing holidays away from the crowds.
The island’s capital is Chora. Built on the slopes of a hill, Chora boasts a beautiful setting and a breathtaking view of the Aegean sea. Chora is a great sample of traditional Cycladic architecture, as it has whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches and narrow alleys.
The Winery
Our traditional cozy winery is located on the northwest side of Sikinos, in the picturesque Cyclades. It is perched at 400 meters above sea level and is cultivated on terraces. The landscape is carved out of stone and sea while our estate is situated on a wild, rough, but fertile vineyard land, which since the ancient times produces wine.

The oldest record of our cheese tradition is in 1922 but we know that the ancestors of the grandparents of the family also earned a living by the sheep and goats, their milk and its products. Back then the cheese-making was done in stone cells (rooms) in a cauldron over the fire. People and animals struggled to survive. The head of the family at that time was Dimitris Haros the grandfather who bequeathed invaluable knowledge to the family which lingers till today.
Guided Tour
During the tour, you will see a museum about the daily life and survival of the locals through the centuries. The historical cheesery of the ancestors of the family and the narration of the traditional cheese-making step by step are of particular interest. At the end of the tour, you will have heard, seen and touched the history of the island.
